Diablo 3 Necromancer Q&A with the developers

Diablo 3

Two of the developers working on the new Diablo 3 class answered questions in a livestream yesterday. Senior game designer Travis Day and lead VFX artist Julian Love revealed a lot of details about the necromancer.

The Necromancer in Diablo 3

Below is a brief summary of the most important points:

  • The Necromancer DLC will contain the new class, 2 character slots, 2 box tabs, a banner, pet, wings and portrait frame.
  • There will be 4 class sets and set dungeons
  • The majority of Necromancer abilities will be Physical damage, with small amounts of Frost and Poison damage.
  • The team tried to keep the sets as open as possible without forcing the players into drawers. The only exception was the pet class set, but since pets are the core of the necromancer class, this is appropriate.
  • The "Saint" set focuses on close combat
  • The Xbox and PC versions are separate, so you have to buy the DLC separately.
  • The development team took another close look at the Diablo 2 Necromancer and its curses, but wanted more interesting abilities than simple + X % damage effects.
  • Resource Cost Reduction will not affect the necromancer's life cost. The decision was a tight one, but would have been too risky given the variety of object interactions.
  • There are currently no items that increase the times for pets or increase the maximum. In the future, however, the team is planning items that allow the maximum to be reached faster or to strengthen the pets.
  • For the Plague set, new legendary items are coming next week that go very well together.

The necromancer should be authentic

  • The developers designed the necromancer without regard to 2-3-4 person rifts, but attached importance to it being authentic and having typical abilities like curses, pets, blood and bones.
  • Necromancers get scythes and urns, but no special armor such as demon hunters with chest armor.
  • In-house testing showed that the essence resource was automatically regenerated, but this felt wrong and the team decided to upgrade the essence generating abilities instead.
  • All new Legendary Items should be available for testing on the test server by next Tuesday.
  • There are over 1100 monsters in Diablo 3 at the moment, which made it very complex to get the Revive Skill to work.
  • Even if it would be interesting to be able to revive your companions with Revive as a pet, there are currently no plans to implement this.
  • Unfortunately there won't be an iron golem like in Diablo 2.
  • Necromancers have white hair, which is why the story explains.
  • The reward for the necromancer set dungeons will be 2 new pennants. It will not affect the old achievements for the wings.

So much for the answers from the Blizzard developers. The Necromancer is slated for Diablo 3 this year. The new class will be available in the form of a paid DLC for PC and consoles.
