It's been almost 2 years since Final Fantasy XI For mobile was announced and since then Square Enix has kept a low profile. The project, which is in the hands of Nexon, surfaced again today with some new screenshots.

Back in 2015, Square Enix and Nexon announced the collaboration to develop a mobile version of Final Fantasy XI. The title was still planned for 2016.

Final Fantasy XI was the first MMO RPG offshoot of the series and thus the predecessor to Final Fantasy XIV. With significantly heavier game mechanics and sometimes very complex interactions, it made a name for itself for hardcore fans and was therefore not as successful in the West as FF XIV. In Asia, however, the game continues to enjoy great popularity.

Because of these more sophisticated game elements, the fans were already amazed at what an adequate implementation could look like. These concerns probably led to the long development time. In the meantime, the technical possibilities of modern smartphones have made a huge leap forward and games such as the mobile version of Final Fantasy XV are enjoying great popularity.

The new screenshots look great, but unfortunately don't provide any information on UI, capabilities or controls. So it remains to be seen how much the game has been simplified to make do with the limited control options of a smartphone or tablet.
