Update: Part 2 was released today
Original message: The producers of NoClip have started releasing their three-part documentary about Final Fantasy XIV. Long awaited by the fans, the documentary sheds light on the rather unique history and relaunch of Final Fantasy XIV.
NoClip is a YouTube channel on which detailed videos about computer games and their backgrounds, developers and fans are published. The whole thing is financed through crowdfunding in the form of the Patreon system.
So far you can already see videos of Rocket League, Doom, The Witness and many other games their YouTube channel find.
The latest project deals with Final Fantasy XIV (FF14).
Why Final Fantasy XIV?
FF14 is one of the most interesting stories in the MMORPG (Massive Multiplay Online Roleplaying Games) scene. When it was released, FF14 was quite a failure, the individual parts like story, combat system etc. just didn't fit together and didn't make a good game. For the iconic Final Fantasy series, this was of course a huge fiasco, the flagship for Square Enix and the fans deserved better. Initial plans to fix the problems with patches were quickly abandoned. Naoki Yoshida, better known as Yoshi-P, then took over the helm and made sure that the FF14 was completely redesigned, a project that is unique in this form. Usually studios just write off such a failure and the energy goes into the successor.
In this case, under Yoshi-P's leadership, every effort was made to make FF14 a milestone in the genre.
From today's standpoint, it's clear to say that the team achieved just that. Final Fantasy XIV is now the second largest MMO in the world with subscription (monthly fee) after World of Warcraft. While almost all other MMOs are now switching to FreeToPlay models and finance themselves through the sale of cosmetic items such as horses or colorful armor, FF14 is flourishing more and more.
With the recently published 2nd expansion Stormblood the story of Eorza continues seamlessly and millions of players are currently experiencing the new adventures.
The NoClip documentation tells this piece of game history, loosened up with interviews with all those involved. Part 1 was released today, June 23rd, and can be viewed for free on YouTube. The next two parts will appear shortly.
