Publisher Sega has announced the revival of their greatest classics. When the “Road to 2020” presentation was published at the end of the fiscal year 2017 in March, the plans for the future were presented.
The following points are announced under the goals and business strategies segment:
Packaged Games Field (example titles: Total War: Warhammer, Yakuza 6: The Song of Life, Football Manager 2017, and Persona 5)
- Expand existing IPs and obtain new IPs for North American and European PC games
- Build revenue base by being entrusted with outsourced development
- Challenge for new IPs
- Revival of major IPs
- Effective utilization of development engines
Digital Games Field (example titles: Puyo Puyo !! Quest, Hortensia Saga, Chain Chronicle 3, and Phantasy Star Online 2)
- Create titles that will become global hits
- Establish digital marketing business
- Expand overseas publishing business
- Maintain profits through long-term operation of existing titles
- Develop next-generation titles
Like other publishers, Sega has the "problem" of developing new brands that can become cult games and establish entire game series. So what could be more natural than to revive already known and successful IPs and to re-market them through new editions or reboots. Sega also wants to focus more on broader publication on all platforms such as PC, mobile market and game consoles.
The report also mentions that Persona 5 and Total War: Warhammer have had a very good sales start and that a total of 10.28 million games were sold in the past fiscal year, more than in the previous year. Sega continues to rely on Persona 5 and the upcoming titles Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III, Endless Space 2 and Total War: Warhammer 2. This means that up to 11.6 million games will be sold in 2018.

In 2016, Sega Japan started a voting on the topic of “Most Hoped Revival” (most popular revival of a game brand). It remains to be seen whether and which of these candidates will be waiting for a reboot:
