A big Pokémon Go festival in Chicago turned into a fiasco for fans and developers Niantic.
Over 20,000 disappointed fans loudly vented their displeasure after standing in queues for hours at the entrance caused discomfort.
There was also no trace of the promised Pokémon that were to be hunted and captured together. The server and WLAN capacities of the site were so overwhelmed that at times nothing worked. Many of the players came especially for the special monsters. The mood was therefore pretty much in the basement.
Accordingly, the reception for Niantic boss John Hanke was when he took the stage and apologized for the problems. A bottle even flew onto the stage, but luckily it didn't hit anyone. The apology and admission that the problems are on Niantic's side fell on deaf ears. Only during the day, when the problems were resolved and compensation for the tickets was promised, did the mood calm down.
Pokémon Go game currency as compensation
As compensation, Niantic is offering all visitors 100 US dollars in the form of the Pokémon Go in-game currency, Pokecoins. All players also get the previously unavailable Pokémon Lugia. This announcement appeased at least some of the fans.
Still quite a bust and not a good publicity for Pokémon Go and Niantic. Nintendo's flagship in the mobile market is a huge phenomenon, the app has been downloaded more than 750 million times since it was launched and the current number of players is still a gigantic 60 million players. According to the latest reports, Pokémon Go has already brought in more than $ 1 billion for the operator.
