After the ominous trailer that Bandai Namco published a few days ago, there is now more specific information about Code Vein from the Japanese Weekly Famitsu magazine.
Unfortunately, Code Vein has nothing to do with Dark Souls or FromSoftware
Code Vein is a new action RPG based on Unreal Engine 4. The development team is largely made up of well-known names that have previously been the God Eater Series developed.
The #PrepareToDine Slogan used on the trailer suggested a connection to the Dark Souls series. The Game of the Year Edition of Dark Souls was back then with "Prepare To Die " subtitled.
In addition, there were several NPCs in the final DLC of Dark Souls 3: The Ringed City, the phrase "Let the Feast begin" and the community therefore assumed a connection. These assumptions have now been refuted and the #PrepareToDine Slogan is only intended as a nifty advertising ploy. FromSoftware, the developer studio behind the Dark Souls franchise, has nothing to do with the new game.
Code Vein - a completely new story and world
Now that that's cleared, we're looking forward to a completely new adventure:
Code Vein is set in the near future. A future in which the earth's crust was pierced by so-called "spikes of justice" and everything crumbled into ruins. The "Vein" is a closed community in which beings known as "Revenants" struggle to survive.
The revenants have superhuman abilities but have had to pay for it with the loss of most of their memories. When a revenant is low on blood, he threatens to become a monster called the "Lost", to prevent that they are forced to drink blood.
The player becomes a member of these revenants and explores the world of the Vein together with allies. This is a dangerous adventure with the sheer numbers of lost people wandering the Vein. During his journey, the player will slowly reveal the background to the origins of the revenants and clear up the mysteries of the Vein himself. Is the origin of Vein, a city that has been ruined by the spikes of justice, connected to the birth of the revenants? What truth awaits the player at the end of his desperate journey?
Never walk alone
One of the great features of Code Vein is the existence of the "Buddy's". On the journey through Vein, the player can be accompanied by a single buddy. Together you face dangers and defeat the lost monsters that rule the world populate. The duo visits a variety of areas, from rocky mountain areas to ice caves to underground shopping centers. Thanks to the buddy, additional tactics such as dummies allow the player to survive the dangerous areas.
The weapons and magic system
Revenants have a wide variety of weapon types. Mainly melee weapons such as greatswords or one-handed swords, each of which has unique attacks.
Similar to Dark Souls, everyone can find a weapon for their personal style of play.
Blood Veils are typical revenant equipment that allows the blood of the lost to be soaked up. The blood veils usually take the form of clothing, but unlike armor they offer special game mechanics while drinking blood. In addition, they allow the blood to be fed to the revenant and so into a to transform more violent, stronger form. Since there are different types of blood veils with different abilities, it is up to the player to choose which weapon to combine with which blood veil.
For example, a blood veil turns the user's right hand into a sinister claw that is used to suckle blood in close combat.
The sucked blood serves as fuel for Tempered Blood, a revenant technique that is used to strengthen the revenant, to weaken his enemies and for direct attacks. A balance between sucking out blood and using it properly is key to exploring veins and passing dungeons.
An example of Tempered Blood is the summoning of columns of blood from the ground that attack the enemy. This is particularly suitable against multiple opponents and allows them to be fought from a distance.
Code Vein development is complete at about 35%. The game is scheduled to be released in 2018 and it is not yet known for which platforms it will be developed.
